- Professional Excavators is a family-owned company founded by Jan Gryckiewicz Sr. in 1975.
- From 1975 to 1980, Professional Excavators handled approximately 60 percent of the excavations for highrise construction in downtown Calgary.
- 1983 – Jan Gryckiewicz Jr. joins Professional Excavators full-time after graduating from British Columbia Institute of Technology with a civil engineering diploma. A majority of Professional Excavators senior management hold industry-related professional designations.
- 1993 – Jan became Professional Excavators' President. When Jan took over, many Calgary general contracting firms and developers were seeking a mid-sized earthworks company offering the same integrated services as the multi-national construction companies. Since 1993, Professional Excavators has added many new services, such as site services (public and private), demolition, de-watering, street sweeping and in 2009 concrete flatworks and asphalt paving to build on its integrated-service capability.
- 1993 – 2008 Professional Excavators was responsible for 85 percent of excavation or commercial/multi-family highrise construction in downtown and 90 percent of service tie-ins.
- Professional Excavators received its COR Certification in 1994.
- Professional Excavators became a City of Calgary sewer and water indemnified contractor in 2001, which allowed excavation work and tie-ins on city property.
- In 2007, Professional Excavators became the first commercial excavator in the City of Calgary to purchase a long-stick excavator with a boom capable of reaching over 60 feet.
- Professional Excavators was the first earthworks company in Calgary to purchase a street sweeper in 2007 as part of its environmental programs. Streets around all of our jobsites are swept to prevent soil and other site materials from entering the storm drains and harming aquatic life, or posing a risk to motor vehicles and humans.
- Today, Professional Excavators has over 100 employees. In the last 16 years, we've completed hundreds of millions of dollars worth of projects in Calgary and the surrounding area. Our projects have had a major impact on Calgary. We have contributed towards the construction of many of Calgary's sports arenas, office buildings, golf courses and even the Alberta Children's Hospital both on the major addition to the old hospital and construction of the new facility.
